The Walt Disney Company has announced that actor, singer and producer Selena Gomez will make her directorial debut with the upcoming final chapter of ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’, marking a key milestone in the Disney+ and Disney Channel series.

In a media statement, Disney said ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ will return this summer as a four-part event across Disney+, Disney Channel and Disney Channel On Demand, bringing the story to a close. The series is a continuation of the Emmy Award-winning ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ and follows the next chapter of the Russo family.

In India Disney productions could be streamed on JioHotstar and seen on Disney’s linear television channels earmarked for such shows.

Gomez, who serves as an executive producer on the show, will direct the premiere episode — her first time helming a project — while also reprising her fan-favourite role as Alex Russo in multiple episodes of the final instalment.

The upcoming storyline centres on Billie, a young wizard grappling with the aftermath of losing Alex at the end of the previous season. As per the official synopsis, Billie must reunite with her estranged father in a bid to save her mother, setting off a chain of events that brings the Russo family together to confront an overarching evil threat.

Disney said the narrative will focus on themes of family, unity and resilience, as the characters combine their powers in an effort to overcome the forces working against them. The storyline builds on the emotional stakes established in earlier seasons, with the family’s bond playing a central role in the conclusion.

The series features a returning ensemble cast including David Henrie, Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, Taylor Cora and Mimi Gianopulos, alongside Gomez’s appearances. The show continues to blend fantasy elements with coming-of-age storytelling rooted in family dynamics.

Production on the four-part final chapter is set to begin shortly, with Disney positioning the project as a culmination of the rebooted franchise’s journey since its debut. The original series, which aired from 2007 to 2012, had built a strong fan base, with the sequel extending its legacy for a new generation of viewers.

Disney said Gomez’s move into directing reflects both her longstanding association with the franchise and her evolving creative role within the industry, as the company continues to invest in talent-driven storytelling across its streaming and television platforms.
