Oscar-winning actors Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis have teamed up to bring the popular ‘Scarpetta’ novels to the screen with a new crime drama series on Prime Video. Titled ‘Scarpetta’, the mystery series premiered on March 11 and features both actors as executive producers as well as lead performers.
According to a PTI report, the show is based on the bestselling books by crime novelist Patricia Cornwell, whose Scarpetta series has long been popular among readers of forensic and mystery thrillers. The television adaptation brings the story of medical examiner Kay Scarpetta and the complex investigations she handles into a dramatic, character-driven format designed for streaming audiences.
Curtis reflected on the unusual journey that led to the project, recalling how her career has evolved since the release of her 1994 blockbuster ‘True Lies’. She joked that when she was filming the movie’s famous action sequences — including a daring helicopter stunt over the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys — she never imagined that three decades later she would be sitting in New York discussing a television show alongside Kidman.
“I guarantee you when I was literally hanging under a helicopter above the Florida Keys, I did not imagine that years later I’d be sitting in New York City with Nicole Kidman,” Curtis said while talking about the show. She added that the project has been especially exciting because both actors share creative control as executive producers while also portraying central characters in the story.
In ‘Scarpetta’, Kidman plays the brilliant forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta, a character known for her sharp intellect and relentless pursuit of justice. Curtis appears as her complicated and unpredictable sister, adding emotional depth and tension to the narrative as the series explores family relationships alongside high-stakes criminal investigations.
The ‘Scarpetta’ novels have long been considered landmarks in the crime and forensic thriller genre, blending scientific detail with psychological drama. With Kidman and Curtis leading the adaptation both on-screen and behind the scenes, the series aims to introduce the beloved literary character to a new generation of viewers while staying faithful to the gripping tone that made Cornwell’s books a global success.
