Hungama OTT has expanded its original content slate with the launch of its new series ‘Begum of Crime’, a dark female-led crime thriller that premiered in March 2026. Positioned within the crime genre, the show explores themes of ambition, survival, and power while tracing the emotional and psychological transformation of a woman determined to carve her own path.
According to a Hungama OTT press release, ‘Begum of Crime’ delves into the psychology of ambition, the relentless hunger for respect, and the thin line that separates empowerment from destruction. The series centres on Divya, portrayed by Sana Makbul, a character who challenges the idea of the conventional heroine.
Divya is fierce, flawed, and unapologetically driven. Leaving behind the safety of her home, she sets out to build a life entirely on her own terms. In a world that repeatedly dismisses her ambitions, she refuses to shrink or accept defeat. What begins as a struggle for survival gradually evolves into something far more dangerous.
With each setback, Divya’s resolve hardens. As the story unfolds, compromises begin to pull her deeper into morally ambiguous territory. Deception becomes a tool, manipulation becomes armour, and betrayal slowly turns into a stepping stone. The narrative follows her transformation from an underestimated dreamer into a calculating force, with the eventual descent into crime becoming the central arc of the story.
Speaking about the project, Sana Makbul said she had been waiting for the right opportunity to make her debut in the OTT space. “I’ve been waiting for the right project to mark my OTT debut, and Begum of Crime felt like the perfect choice. Divya is bold, unapologetic, and dangerously determined. She operates in grey shades; you don’t always agree with her. As an actor, it was emotionally challenging to step into her psyche because she believes that if the world refuses to give her respect, she’ll take it by any means necessary. That emotional fire is what makes her both powerful and unpredictable,” she said.
Actor Karan Sharma, who plays Guddu in the series, highlighted the emotional shift that defines his character’s journey. He noted that Guddu is initially fascinated by Divya’s confidence and sharp thinking, but gradually begins to realise that her ambition runs far deeper than he had imagined.
“What drew me to Guddu was the emotional shift his journey goes through. When he first meets Divya, he is fascinated by her boldness and sharp mind. But as they begin committing crimes together, he slowly realises that her ambition runs far deeper and darker than he imagined. Watching that transformation unfold, and being a part of it, was both thrilling and unsettling,” Sharma said.
With ‘Begum of Crime’, Hungama OTT is betting on a darker, character-driven narrative that places a complex female protagonist at the centre of a crime story, reflecting the platform’s push towards edgy, layered storytelling in the digital entertainment space.
