The Oscar-nominated film ‘The Secret Agent’ is set to arrive in Indian cinemas on February 27, following a celebrated run at international film festivals and award ceremonies.
Starring Wagner Moura in the lead, the Brazilian political thriller has drawn global attention for its gripping narrative, strong performances and evocative direction.
According to an ANI report, the film is set in Brazil in 1977, a period marked by political unrest and fear. ‘The Secret Agent’ follows Marcelo, a technology expert who returns to his hometown of Recife hoping to leave behind a troubled past and live quietly.
However, his plans are derailed as the city pulls him back into a dangerous world of surveillance, moral dilemmas and high-stakes choices.
Directed by acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, the film has earned widespread critical praise and secured four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. The collaboration between Mendonça Filho and Moura has been particularly lauded for bringing emotional depth and tension to a story rooted in a turbulent political climate.
The film’s awards journey has been equally impressive. At the Cannes Film Festival, Mendonça Filho won Best Director, while Wagner Moura took home the Best Actor award. The momentum continued at the Golden Globes, where Moura won Best Actor in a Drama, and ‘The Secret Agent’ was awarded Best Foreign Language Film, further cementing its international acclaim.
Speaking about his character, Wagner Moura said Marcelo is far from a conventional hero. “He is a man trying to remain humane in a world that constantly tests him. The response to the film has been overwhelming, and I’m excited for Indian audiences to connect with its emotional and political resonance,” the actor said in a statement released by the makers.
With its powerful storytelling and strong political undercurrents, ‘The Secret Agent’ is expected to appeal to Indian audiences who appreciate intense, thought-provoking cinema when it releases nationwide on February 27.
