NatGeo celebrates 138 years with ‘Stories That Spark Wonder’ campaign

National Geographic has marked its 138th anniversary with the launch of a new brand campaign titled ‘Stories That Spark Wonder’, reflecting on the enduring impact of storytelling that goes beyond showing the world to helping audiences understand it. The campaign draws from the brand’s long legacy across exploration, science, photography and journalism, underscoring why certain stories about people, places and wildlife continue to resonate long after they are first encountered.

As outlined in a press release, the anniversary initiative looks back at more than a century of research-backed, visually driven storytelling that has come to define National Geographic. Its iconic yellow border has become synonymous with curiosity-led narratives, taking audiences from early field expeditions to present-day explorations across remote landscapes, extreme environments and diverse cultures. Over the decades, the brand has also documented key milestones in visual storytelling, from pioneering natural-colour aerial and underwater photography to experimenting with innovative magazine covers, including one featuring a hologram.

The campaign also revisits National Geographic’s role in chronicling the journeys of explorers, scientists and filmmakers who have shaped global understanding of the planet. From primatologist Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking work to cinematic storytellers like Jimmy Chin and James Cameron, the brand has consistently highlighted individuals pushing the boundaries of discovery and knowledge.

In India, National Geographic has cultivated a strong and loyal audience by blending global narratives with local relevance. Through stories on wildlife, conservation, heritage, science and culture, the brand has continued to connect Indian viewers with both the country’s own biodiversity and the wider world, across television, print and digital platforms.

Commenting on the milestone, Alok Jain of JioStar said the 138-year journey reflects the deep trust National Geographic has built with audiences worldwide. He noted that the ‘Stories That Spark Wonder’ campaign honours the brand’s legacy while reinforcing its relevance for present and future generations by remaining rooted in exploration, truth and visual excellence.

To commemorate the anniversary, National Geographic is rolling out a month-long curated programming slate titled ‘138 Years of Wonder’. The line-up spans wildlife, science, adventure, travel and investigative storytelling, with titles such as ‘Cheetahs Up Close with Bertie Gregory’, ‘India From Above’, ‘David Blaine: Do Not Attempt’, ‘Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller’ and ‘Ocean with David Attenborough’. The special programming airs throughout the month, Monday to Friday at 8 pm, on the National Geographic Channel.
