State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling, across India, marking a major step towards improving connectivity in areas with weak or limited mobile network coverage.
The nationwide rollout came into effect on New Year and is now available to BSNL customers across all telecom circles.
According to an IANS report, the service allows users to make and receive voice calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network, ensuring clear and reliable communication even in challenging locations such as homes, offices, basements and remote regions. BSNL said the initiative is aimed at delivering seamless and high-quality connectivity, particularly in rural and underserved areas where conventional mobile signals often struggle.
VoWiFi is especially beneficial in regions where a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services. By routing calls over Wi-Fi, the service also helps reduce congestion on mobile networks. Importantly, BSNL has clarified that Wi-Fi calls will be offered free of cost, with no additional charges for customers.
In a statement, the Ministry of Communications said VoWiFi enables uninterrupted calling by supporting seamless handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. The service is based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology and allows users to make calls using their existing mobile number and phone dialer, without the need to download or rely on third-party applications.
The ministry further noted that VoWiFi is supported on most modern smartphones. Customers only need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling option in their handset settings to start using the service. For information on device compatibility or assistance, BSNL users can visit the nearest customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 1800-1503.
The launch of VoWiFi forms a key part of BSNL’s ongoing network modernisation programme. The government said the initiative reflects BSNL’s commitment to strengthening digital connectivity across the country and ensuring reliable communication services reach even the most remote and underserved regions.
