Chris Hemsworth's emotional alzheimer’s 'Road Trip' doc premieres tonight

Chris Hemsworth is set to take viewers on one of the most personal journeys of his life in ‘Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember’, a new National Geographic documentary that follows the actor as he embarks on a deeply emotional motorcycle ride across Australia with his father, Craig, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

The one-hour film, produced by Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa, Jane Root’s Nutopia, and Hemsworth’s Wild State, premieres on Friday, November 28, at 7 pm on National Geographic.

The film captures the father-son duo as they retrace memories from their past—travelling from suburban Melbourne to the vast Northern Territory—reflecting on family, connection and the quiet power of shared experiences.

The project, shaped by scientific insight throughout its year-long development, serves as both a personal tribute and an exploration of the role community and routine play in supporting brain health.

Guided by dementia specialist Dr. Suraj Samtani from the University of New South Wales Centre for Healthy Brain Aging, Chris and Craig’s journey draws from real therapeutic practices that support cognitive function. These include reminiscence therapy—using memories, physical objects, and familiar places to stimulate cognition—and the importance of social connection and wider community engagement, which research shows can significantly reduce dementia risk and slow cognitive decline.

Set against sweeping Australian landscapes, the documentary blends quiet humour, nostalgia, and heartfelt conversations as Chris, often filming himself, reflects on the significance of taking this long-delayed trip. “My Dad and I had always spoken about taking a trip back to the Northern Territory, where our family had lived years ago,” Hemsworth said. “More recently the idea of taking that road trip reemerged with more pressing importance. The result was a more profound, more moving, and more surprising journey than I ever anticipated.”

The film arrives months after National Geographic’s release of LIMITLESS: LIVE BETTER NOW, where Hemsworth explored science-backed ways to improve everyday life. Its “Brain Power” episode—featuring Hemsworth performing “Thinking Out Loud” onstage with Ed Sheeran before 70,000 fans—became a viral moment, amassing nearly 35 million views across social platforms. With LIMITLESS ranking as Nat Geo’s second most-watched streaming series globally, the upcoming documentary looks set to resonate just as widely.

Reinforced by a global study of 40,000 people across 14 countries, Dr. Samtani’s research highlights that those with strong, regular social interactions cut their risk of developing dementia by half—an insight that forms the emotional heart of the film. Through a moving blend of science, family history, and shared adventure, ‘A Road Trip to Remember’ becomes not just a documentary, but a celebration of connection when it matters most.
