Netflix has announced the premiere of its upcoming Tamil psychological thriller ‘Stephen’, a story that dives deep into the unsettling world of manipulation, trauma and a mind that may not always be trusted.
The film, directed and written by debutant filmmaker Mithun, arrives on the platform on December 5, introducing a darker, layered narrative set within walls “that have seen too much and revealed too little.”
According to the Netflix Newsroom, ‘Stephen’ follows a malicious and calculated serial killer whose motives remain as murky as the murder at the centre of the story.
Featuring Gomathi Shankar in a powerful leading performance, the film examines long-buried secrets, fractured memories and the terrifying possibility that the human mind can be its own worst enemy. With its tense emotional undercurrent and atmospheric score, the thriller marks the emergence of a distinct new voice in Tamil cinema streaming on Netflix.
Monika Shergill, Vice-President, Content, Netflix India, said the film brings a fresh sensibility to the platform’s growing southern-language slate. She described ‘Stephen’ as a twisted psychological thriller that “keeps audiences guessing until the very last frame,” applauding Mithun’s assured directorial debut and Gomathi Shankar’s intense portrayal of the titular character. She added that the film underscores Netflix’s commitment to championing unique creators, allowing new and established talents to thrive side by side.
For director Mithun, the project is personal. Calling ‘Stephen’ a story about a calculated killer carrying deeply personal secrets, he said Gomathi Shankar brings a “quiet intensity” that makes the character feel both real and unsettling. He credited Netflix for offering the space to explore a genre that demands honesty and sensitivity. “The fact that our film will be available across over 190 countries feels unreal,” he shared, hoping the audience connects with what he describes as a humble yet heartfelt attempt at the craft.
Produced by Jayakumar and Mohan under JM Production House, the film also stars Michael Thangadurai and Smruthi Venkat, with writing credits shared between Mithun and Gomathi Shankar. Rooted in emotion and wrapped in suspense, ‘Stephen’ invites viewers into a world where truth is slippery, memories mislead and no one is quite who they appear to be.
‘Stephen’ streams December 5, exclusively on Netflix.
