Hollywood filmmaker Jon M Chu, best known for his work on ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and the upcoming two-part ‘Wicked’ adaptation, has been confirmed as the director of the live-action film ‘Hot Wheels’, based on the iconic Mattel toy car brand.
The project marks the next ambitious collaboration between Warner Bros and Mattel, following the global blockbuster ‘Barbie’, which grossed over USD 1.4 billion at the worldwide box office in 2023.
As per a PTI report, the plot details for ‘Hot Wheels’ remain under tight wraps, but expectations are running high, especially after the immense success of ‘Barbie’, which redefined how audiences view toy-based franchises. With Chu stepping into the director’s seat, industry watchers believe the project will blend high-octane action with heart and nostalgia — qualities synonymous with the Hot Wheels brand since its launch in 1968.
The film is set to be a major piece in the expanding Mattel cinematic universe, as the company continues to develop films based on its classic toy properties. The ‘Hot Wheels’ franchise, in particular, has been a favorite among generations of fans, celebrated for its miniature die-cast cars, elaborate race tracks, and adrenaline-fueled themes of speed and competition.
In a statement following the announcement, Warner Bros and Mattel expressed their excitement about partnering with Chu, noting his proven track record in delivering visually dynamic, emotionally engaging stories. While no cast members or release date have been announced yet, the studio has promised more updates in the coming months.
