Deepak Kumar Jha named executive editor of The Pioneer

New Delhi, 2 June, 2025, By IBW Team

Deepak Kumar Jha

Seasoned journalist Deepak Kumar Jha, with over two decades of experience in field reporting and newsroom leadership, has been appointed as the new Executive Editor of The Pioneer, the nation’s oldest English daily, founded in 1865.

The appointment follows a long and challenging phase for the paper, which recently emerged from a protracted five-year battle at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). With the legacy of the late veteran journalist and two-time Rajya Sabha MP Dr Chandan Mitra resting heavily on its shoulders, the management has entrusted Jha with the responsibility of steering the editorial direction forward.

After Chandan Mitra’s passing in September 2021, his second wife and senior foreign affairs journalist, Ms Shobori Ganguli, took charge as Editor-in-Chief. Under her leadership, the publication has continued to maintain its voice across eight English and three Hindi editions nationwide. Dr Mitra’s son, Kushan Mitra, also a senior journalist, is now the Printer and Publisher, and remains on the Board of Directors along with Ms Ganguli and other key members.

Jha is no stranger to The Pioneer. He has served the organisation for a large part of his career, having held critical editorial roles including Bureau Chief and Metro Editor. In addition to his long association with the paper, he has had stints with Doordarshan Bharti and played a significant role in launching the Delhi edition of the Mumbai-based tabloid MiD DAY.

His reporting career has spanned vital beats such as Parliament, the Ministries of Education, Railways, Road Transport and Highways, Personnel, and major national political parties. He has also covered all General Elections from 2004 to 2024, and numerous State Assembly polls. Known for his political insight, Jha’s reports once led authorities to reschedule competitive exam dates during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to avoid overlapping with a holiday stretch in the Delhi-NCR region.

Jha’s journalism has often ruffled feathers. His investigative reports have drawn censorship from ministries in successive governments. His fearless reporting on Bihar’s liquor prohibition laws, exposing how children were being used as carriers of contraband in school bags, earned him the prestigious FICCI Journalism Award. The honour was presented by Supreme Court Judge Justice Sanjay Karol, Delhi High Court Judge Navin Chawla, former Lokayukta Manmohan Sarin, and FICCI Cascade Chairman Anil Rajput.

Among other major assignments, he reported on the consecration of the new Ram Janmabhoomi temple and received widespread appreciation for his coverage. He has represented Indian media in several international forums, including diplomatic assignments across countries like the USA, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Finland, and the UAE.

Jha was also part of the Parliament’s Media Advisory Committee (Rajya Sabha) and is currently associated as an honorary advisor with several social organisations. During the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown, his relentless ground-level efforts to serve the needy while ensuring daily newspaper circulation earned him significant praise.

An alumnus of Delhi University, Jha holds a Master’s degree in History, a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism, and a Bachelor’s degree in Arts. He continues to engage with academia as a guest lecturer at prominent journalism institutions and universities across the country.
