Actor and filmmaker Dev Patel is stepping behind the camera once again for his next big project—a period revenge thriller titled ‘The Peasant’.
Patel, who earned international acclaim for his recent directorial debut ‘Monkey Man’, is now set to write, direct, produce, and also headline this gripping new feature under the banner of Universal Pictures.
As per a report by Press Trust of India, ‘The Peasant’ will mark Patel’s continued evolution as a multi-hyphenate force in global cinema. The film is described as a gritty, character-driven tale set against the backdrop of 16th-century India, exploring themes of vengeance, oppression, and resilience. While plot specifics remain under wraps, sources suggest the story will centre around a commoner who rises up against a corrupt ruling class—promising high-stakes drama with emotional depth and stunning visuals.
Patel will co-produce the project through his company Minor Realm alongside Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, with backing from Universal. This collaboration with Peele’s banner has sparked buzz, particularly after the global reception of ‘Monkey Man’, which blended myth, modernity, and action with raw, socio-political commentary.
In a statement, Universal Pictures shared their excitement about reuniting with Patel, calling him “a visionary storyteller with a unique voice.”
