Actors Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi have completed filming their upcoming courtroom drama, inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case.
Directed by Suparn S. Varma, the film delves into the pivotal legal battle that stirred national debate on gender rights, religious personal laws, and constitutional justice in India.
Yami Gautam portrays Shah Bano, a 62-year-old woman who, after being divorced by her husband, sought maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code—a secular provision mandating support for divorced women unable to sustain themselves. Emraan Hashmi plays a character inspired by her former husband, Ahmed Khan, a respected lawyer who contested her claim.
The film is the second installment in Suparn S. Varma’s courtroom trilogy, following 2023’s ‘Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai’, which starred Manoj Bajpayee. Shot across various locations in Lucknow, including Kakori and Sandila, the movie aims to authentically capture the socio-legal landscape of the era.
Scheduled for a theatrical release in October or November 2025, the film promises intense performances and hard-hitting dialogues, shedding light on a case that remains a significant moment in the struggle for Muslim women’s rights in India.
