Amazon will rebrand its free ad-supported streaming service, Amazon miniTV, to Amazon MX Player after acquiring certain assets from the rival platform MX Player, according to a report in moneycontrol.com
As part of the rebranding, Amazon has updated the miniTV account on X (formerly Twitter) to reflect its new identity as Amazon MX Player. The account bio now highlights the service’s availability across multiple platforms, including the Amazon shopping app, Prime Video, Fire TV, Xiaomi Smart TVs, Google TV, the Play Store, and the App Store. However, the website and mobile app still feature the miniTV branding. (https://www.moneycontrol.com/technology/amazon-to-rebrand-minitv-streaming-service-as-amazon-mx-player-article-12824300.html)
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to moneycontrol.com the acquisition of MX Player’s assets, including its apps and select content. The spokesperson expressed excitement about integrating MX Player’s content with miniTV’s offerings and announced plans to introduce new titles and features soon.
Amazon’s interest in MX Player dates back to early 2023, although initial acquisition talks were halted in July 2023. The deal was revived in recent months, culminating in the acquisition of MX Player’s assets for less than $100 million. This valuation marks a significant drop from MX Player’s $500-million valuation in 2019, when it raised $111 million from Tencent.
