Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, has announced a potential fee for new users of the social platform X, indicating they may be required to pay for posting content. Responding to a user query, Musk cited the necessity of implementing a fee to combat the pervasive presence of bots on the platform.
According to IANS, Musk highlighted the ease with which current AI technology, along with troll farms, can circumvent bot detection measures, necessitating a proactive approach to address the issue. He explained that the influx of fake accounts not only undermines the platform’s integrity but also exhausts available usernames, making it challenging for genuine users to secure desired handles.
The proposed fee for new user write access aims to mitigate the influx of bots while facilitating a smoother user experience. Musk clarified that this fee would be temporary, with users gaining free write access after a probationary period of three months.
This announcement follows a previous initiative in October last year, wherein new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines were charged $1 per year. The platform’s recent purge of spam accounts underscores its ongoing efforts to maintain a clean and authentic user environment.
While X has not disclosed the exact number of bots currently present on the platform, the recent crackdown on spam and porn bots reflects its commitment to combatting malicious activity and enhancing user satisfaction.
As X continues its efforts to bolster security and user engagement, the proposed fee structure for new users represents a strategic measure to uphold platform integrity and foster a thriving online community.
