Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) highlighted Reliance Jio’s dominance in the active user market, with the telecom giant adding 1.2 million active users in August.
In contrast, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) experienced losses in active users during the same period. Jio’s expansion was attributed to the increasing demand for its budget-friendly internet-enabled feature phone, Jio Bharat, which attracted a significant number of 2G users from its competitors, Economic Times reported.
The Trai data showcased Jio extending its lead over Airtel, commanding a 40% share of the active user market in August. Meanwhile, Airtel held steady at a 36 percent share, while Vi experienced a decline, falling to a 19.1 percent share. The introduction of Jio Bharat in July notably contributed to a rise in the share of 4G feature phones in the overall feature phone shipments, reaching 32 percent in the September quarter of 2023, as per Counterpoint Research.
However, the combined losses in active users for Airtel and Vi led to an overall decline in the telecom sector’s active user base for the first time in eight months, dropping by 3.1 million in August, according to Trai’s latest data.
Beyond the mobile segment, Jio’s growth extended to its JioFibre service, adding 0.19 million customers in August, totaling its fixed broadband user base to 9.6 million. Airtel also experienced growth, adding 0.16 million users to its wired broadband service, reaching a subscriber base of 6.9 million.
Meanwhile, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam’s (BSNL) wired broadband user base remained relatively stagnant at 3.7 million.
The competitive landscape in the home broadband segment showcased Jio holding a 26.3% share, surpassing Airtel’s 18.9 percent and BSNL’s 10.2 percent shares by the end of August.
