The mystery thriller series 1899, created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar of Dark, will not return for a second season on Netflix. On Monday, co-showrunners and executive producers bo Odar and Friese announced the news on social media. Since the show’s announcement, fans have ensured that the title has been trending worldwide.
“With a heavy heart, we must inform you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season, as we did with Dark. However, sometimes things do not go as planned. That’s life,” the creators said in a joint statement posted to Odar’s Instagram.
The duo, who rose to global prominence after the success of the hit German series Dark, also expressed gratitude to fans for their love and support.
“We understand that this will disappoint millions of fans worldwide. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this incredible journey. We adore you. Never forget,” they said.
Friese wrote the script, and Bo Odar directed 1899, which was billed as a multilingual German period drama about a mixed group of European migrants on a terrifying journey to the United States.
“When they come across another migrant ship stranded on the open sea, their journey takes an unexpected turn. “What they discover on board will turn their journey to the promised land into a terrifying nightmare,” the series’ logline read. Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau starred in the eight-episode series.
