YouTube rolls out Shorts series to up microdrama viewing, monetisation

YouTube is emerging as a platform for microdramas, with creators across the Asia-Pacific region turning short-form videos into fast-paced, multi-part series, as the format draws billions of views and opens up new opportunities for storytelling and monetisation, the platform said in a blog, adding new initiatives are being rolled out to boost viewing.

Microdramas on YouTube crossed 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026, with watch time growing more than 50 percent year-on-year.

Views related to the format rose over 70 percent across Asia-Pacific markets, according to a blog post by the platform. Typically told through 60-second scenes, the series uses cliffhangers and quick-moving narratives to keep viewers engaged across episodes.

The blog highlighted Japan’s GOKKO CLUB and India’s Shorts Break as examples of creators building audiences through the format.

GOKKO CLUB combines cinematic framing with tightly scripted emotional conflicts, drawing viewers into the story within 15 seconds, while also partnering with brands to produce customised short dramas.

Shorts Break, meanwhile, blends relatable humour, family dynamics and unexpected twists, publishing episodes frequently and using audience comments and feedback to shape characters and plotlines.

YouTube said its built-in tools are helping local stories reach international audiences through multi-language audio tracks, AI-driven subtitle localisation and localised metadata, without additional dubbing costs.

The platform said 40 percent of views and 30 percent of clicks on micro-dramas came more than 30 days after publication, allowing older episodes to continue attracting viewers and generating advertising revenue.

To support the format, YouTube is introducing Shorts series, allowing creators to organise videos into seasons and episodes.

Custom thumbnails and sequential playback are designed to help viewers discover and continue watching series, while new monetisation opportunities are also planned.

The platform said it would revamp the mobile experience for members-only episodes in the coming weeks, enabling viewers to join channel memberships and watch subsequent episodes without leaving the content they are viewing.
