Singer Abhijeet Sawant, winner of the inaugural season of ‘Indian Idol’ in 2004, says reality show contestants of his generation found it difficult to establish themselves in playback singing, with the industry dominated by established singers and music directors.
Sawant, who has returned to the singing reality show as a contestant on ‘Indian Idol: Legends Return’, said winning the title brought recognition but did not guarantee a career in playback singing, a PTI report from Mumbai stated yesterday.
“During our time, it was too difficult because it was a restrictive industry. Everything was set; all the singers and music directors were established, and everyone was doing their work,” he said.
Recalling the challenges faced by reality show contestants, Sawant said their growing popularity also triggered insecurity among some in the industry.
“People were insecure that we, the reality show contestants, had become so popular and were now becoming bigger than even playback singers,” he said, adding that contestants had to learn to navigate both the positive and negative aspects of their newfound fame.
More than two decades into his career, Sawant said criticism continues to be part of his professional journey, but he has learnt to remain focused on his work.
“People will taunt you. People will teach you right and wrong, even when they have no experience. But even after tolerating all this, you have to keep your mind right. More than achieving something, the journey is the most important part,” he said in an interview to PTI.
Beyond singing, Sawant has explored television through programmes such as ‘Bigg Boss Marathi’, ‘Celebrity MasterChef’ and ‘Comedy Circus’, besides venturing into films as an actor.
He said the popularity he gained through ‘Indian Idol’ helped him expand his career beyond music.
Pointing to other reality show alumni who have diversified their careers, Sawant cited Rahul Vaidya and Sriram Chandra as examples.
“And that’s why there is not just one star; there are others like Rahul Vaidya. Sriram Chandra is doing films in the South and hosting shows as well,” he added.
Returning to the ‘Indian Idol’ platform, Sawant said he now sees the experience as an opportunity for personal growth and collaboration with younger artists.
‘Indian Idol: Legends Return’ premiered on October 17 and airs on Sony Entertainment Television. The show is also available to stream on SonyLIV.
