Prime Video has renewed ‘Carrie’, its television adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel, for a second season following the series’ impressive debut on the streaming platform, the streamer announced yesterday.
The series marks the first television adaptation of King’s iconic coming-of-age horror story, reimagined by Mike Flanagan, who serves as its showrunner, writer and director.
Based on King’s 1974 novel, ‘Carrie’ offers a contemporary take on the classic story, exploring bullying, social media pressures and the emergence of supernatural abilities during adolescence.
The series follows Carrie White, a misfit high-schooler who has spent her life sheltered at home by her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. After her father’s sudden death forces her into the unforgiving environment of public high school, Carrie confronts a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community as mysterious telekinetic powers begin to emerge.
The eight-episode first season expands on the novel’s central themes, tracing the everyday decisions and escalating tensions that culminate in a shattering night.
Framed as a deeply human story about kindness and cruelty, the series leaves open the question of whether Carrie is becoming a hero, a monster or something more complicated.
All eight episodes from season one are available exclusively on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories.
“‘Carrie’ is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether, including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios.
He added that the response highlights the enduring power of the story and the breadth of Flanagan’s reimagining, expressing excitement about the direction he and King plan to take it.
Flanagan said the creative team had envisioned a story extending beyond the prom from the outset, adding that he was grateful for King’s trust and support in exploring what comes next for Carrie White.
