ZEE Keralam has announced ‘Kanmashi’, a new fiction series that brings together family drama, romance, mystery and a social narrative around conventional ideas of beauty. Set against Kerala’s cultural and emotional backdrop, the series follows Rohini, a young woman whose journey challenges the judgments and prejudices associated with her complexion.

The series explores how societal perceptions of appearance can shape a person’s experiences, relationships and sense of self. Played by Devika Jijeesh, Rohini grows up facing discrimination and assumptions based on the way she looks. However, her story gradually moves beyond these struggles as she learns to build confidence and define her identity on her own terms.

As stated in the press release, the title ‘Kanmashi’, the Malayalam word commonly associated with kajal, carries a deeper metaphorical meaning in the series. While kajal is traditionally used to accentuate the eyes, the title reflects the idea that what is visible on the surface does not reveal the complete person. The series looks at emotions, character, relationships and unspoken truths that lie beneath appearances.

At the centre of Rohini’s emotional world is her father Krishnan, played by Sreejith Kaiveli. His sacrifices and unwavering support have played an important role in shaping Rohini’s life. Their relationship forms one of the key emotional strands of the story, unfolding amid fractured family relationships, unresolved conflicts and past events that continue to affect the present.

Rohini’s life takes another turn with the arrival of Venu, played by Yuva Krishna. A compassionate bank manager with unresolved experiences of his own, Venu becomes an unexpected presence in Rohini’s world. What begins as an unlikely relationship gradually develops as the two find themselves drawn into concealed truths and unanswered questions.

As Rohini and Venu’s lives become increasingly connected, ‘Kanmashi’ moves beyond a conventional love story. Family secrets, emotional wounds and mystery add further layers to the narrative, while an unexpected supernatural element brings another dimension to the story.

At its heart, the series raises a question about beauty and self-worth: can a person’s value really be determined by appearance? Through Rohini’s experiences, ‘Kanmashi’ addresses colour-based prejudice while presenting beauty through qualities such as resilience, compassion, courage and self-belief.

Rather than treating the social issue as a separate message, the show incorporates it into the characters’ relationships and personal journeys. The emotional conflicts within the family and Rohini’s evolving relationship with Venu become important parts of the larger narrative around identity and acceptance.

A ZEE Keralam spokesperson said the channel believes powerful fiction begins with characters and emotions that audiences can recognise from the world around them. According to the spokesperson, ‘Kanmashi’ takes the familiar conversation around beauty and appearance and approaches it through the journey of a woman discovering the strength to define herself on her own terms. The combination of strong family emotions and romance, the spokesperson added, makes the series a distinctive addition to the channel’s fiction line-up.

The series is written by acclaimed writer Pradeep Paniker, whose storytelling is known for its focus on emotionally driven characters and family relationships. With ‘Kanmashi’, Paniker brings together identity, love, family dynamics and social perceptions while building Rohini’s story around emotional depth and intrigue.

With family relationships at the centre of its storytelling, the series also explores how past conflicts can shape the present and how appearances can often hide more complicated realities. Through its mix of family emotions, romance, social themes, mystery and supernatural elements, ‘Kanmashi’ aims to offer audiences a layered story while encouraging them to look beyond what they see on the surface.
