Amazon has launched a new Fire TV Stick 4K that it says gets users to streaming content nearly 20-40 percent faster than a similarly priced 4K streaming stick from another leading brand, alongside a redesigned Fire TV Remote with more tactile controls.
The new Fire TV Stick 4K turns on faster, launches apps more than 35 percent faster and starts playing content nearly 20 percent faster, according to an Amazon update on its website.
The company also said the device played content faster than the built-in experience of three 4K smart TVs it tested, based on an average across the three most popular apps on Fire TV.
The new stick has a slimmer design and supports direct power, allowing it to draw power from a TV’s USB port using the included cable. It runs Amazon’s Vega operating system and comes with Alexa+ and the new Fire TV experience built in.
The device has 8 GB of internal storage, a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and Bluetooth Low Energy support. It supports 4K resolution and formats including HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, H.265, H.264, VP9 and AV1.
Amazon is also simplifying its Fire TV streaming-stick range into three tiers: Fire TV Stick HD as the entry-level option, Fire TV Stick 4K as the core 4K model, and Fire TV Stick 4K Max aimed at gamers and home-theatre users.
The Fire TV Cube will continue to serve customers seeking Amazon’s highest-end Fire TV streaming product, while other existing models will remain available while supplies last.
The redesigned Fire TV Remote has an asymmetric shape with a flat top and curved, weighted bottom, while key buttons have distinct shapes or surfaces that Amazon says make them easier to locate by touch.
The home button has its own metal surface, and the remote also gains a customizable star button that can be assigned to a favourite app or functions such as closed captioning or Screen Magnifier.
Amazon plans to introduce the Fire TV Remote Plus early next year. It will feature an aluminium housing, backlit buttons and a built-in Find My Remote function that can be activated by saying ‘Alexa, find my remote’.
The Fire TV Stick 4K is priced at $59.99 and begins shipping in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Australia. Amazon said additional countries will follow in late October.
