As India’s media and entertainment ecosystem continues to evolve across television, streaming and converged platforms, the industry is increasingly looking at regulatory consistency and policy clarity to support long-term growth.
At FICCI FRAMES 2026, Krishnan Kutty, Head, Entertainment Business, South Cluster, JioStar, shared his perspective during the panel discussion ‘From Regulation to Market Forces: Is It Time for Tariff Forbearance in Broadcasting?’ The discussion focused on the changing broadcasting landscape and the role of regulation and market forces as the sector moves towards greater convergence.
Kutty emphasised that regulatory certainty and consistency in policy are important foundations for sustained growth in the media and entertainment sector. As consumer behaviour and distribution platforms continue to change, he highlighted the need for a regulatory environment that can support innovation, investment and consumer choice.
He also stressed the importance of a unified and constructive dialogue between broadcasters, platforms and regulators. According to Kutty, greater industry alignment and engagement with policymakers can help address emerging challenges and create conditions for the sector to achieve long-term scale.
The discussion comes at a time when the boundaries between traditional linear television, streaming services and converged media platforms are becoming increasingly interconnected. Changes in viewing behaviour, distribution models and consumer expectations are also prompting the industry to examine how existing regulatory frameworks can evolve alongside the market.
The panel’s focus on tariff forbearance reflects the broader industry conversation around the balance between regulatory oversight and market-driven mechanisms in broadcasting. For broadcasters and platforms, the debate is closely linked to how pricing, competition, investment and consumer choice can evolve as the media ecosystem becomes more diversified.
Kutty’s participation at FICCI FRAMES 2026 highlighted the industry’s focus on creating a predictable policy environment while maintaining an open dialogue between stakeholders. As India’s media and entertainment sector continues to expand across platforms, the discussion around regulation and market forces is expected to remain central to its future growth.
