Superstar Aamir Khan is set to be honoured with the Screen Icon Award at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), where he will also attend a special screening of his Oscar-nominated film ‘Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India’ marking its 25th anniversary.

The actor-filmmaker will attend the screening of the 2001 period sports drama alongside its director Ashutosh Gowariker. He will also participate in the festival’s “In Conversation With” series, PTI reported.

In a press release, the festival said the honour recognises Aamir Khan’s contribution to Indian cinema and his enduring impact as an actor and filmmaker.

Set in 1893, when India was under British rule, ‘Lagaan’ follows the residents of a small village who are burdened by oppressive taxes imposed by a ruthless British officer. Faced with the threat of further hardship, the villagers stake their fate on an unlikely game of cricket in a bid to escape the burden.

Released in 2001, ‘Lagaan’ went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and remains one of the most acclaimed films in Aamir Khan’s career.

The special screening at SGIFF will bring Aamir Khan and Gowariker together to revisit the landmark film 25 years after its release, while the “In Conversation With” session will offer audiences an opportunity to hear from the actor-filmmaker about his career and work in cinema.
