The All Local Cable Operators Association of India (ALCOA India) has approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, seeking regulatory intervention over live television streaming services.

According to a letter sent by ALCOA India President Narender Bagri to the TRAI Chairman, platforms such as Jio TV, Dish TV and some other platforms are offering live television streaming services at prices significantly lower than the rates at which cable operators procure and distribute television channels.

The association said consumers can access a large number of live TV channels, including HD channels, at discounted prices. According to ALCOA India, this is creating an unequal competitive environment for cable operators.

The association further said cable operators are already facing a decline in subscriber numbers due to changing market conditions and consumer preferences. It claimed that the availability of low-cost live TV streaming services is putting additional pressure on their subscriber base and making it difficult for operators to sustain their businesses.

ALCOA India also raised concerns about small and medium-sized cable operators, particularly those serving semi-urban and rural areas. The association said the financial difficulties faced by these operators could also affect employees and technicians who depend on the cable television industry for their livelihood.

The association warned that if the situation continues, some cable operators may be forced to shut down their businesses, potentially resulting in job losses and financial difficulties for affected families. It also raised concerns about reduced competition and increased market concentration in the broadcasting and distribution sector.

ALCOA India has requested TRAI to examine the impact of live television streaming services on the cable television industry and consider appropriate regulatory measures to ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders.

The association has also urged TRAI to take suitable steps to safeguard fair competition and protect the interests of cable operators across the country.
