Tata Play has completed 20 years of its commercial Direct-to-Home (DTH) journey, marking a significant milestone in India’s television industry. To commemorate the occasion, Managing Director and CEO Harit Nagpal penned a handwritten postcard expressing gratitude to the millions of families who have made Tata Play a part of their homes over the past two decades.
The company, which began its commercial DTH operations on August 8, 2006 under the name Tata Sky, has grown into India’s largest DTH platform. Originally incorporated in January 2001 as a joint venture between Tata Sons and Network Digital Distribution Services, the brand became a household name with its memorable “Isko laga dala to life jingalala” campaign.
In January 2022, the company rebranded from Tata Sky to Tata Play, reflecting its evolution from a satellite television provider into a broader content aggregation platform. The move positioned the company beyond traditional television by integrating live TV, broadband and OTT services, adapting to changing viewing habits as audiences increasingly consume content across multiple screens.
Over the years, Tata Play has maintained its leadership in India’s pay-DTH market. The platform currently operates 36 transponders, the highest in the country, and offers subscribers access to more than 690 television channels, including over 110 HD channels.
The company’s Binge Combo offering has also emerged as one of its key differentiators, bringing together traditional television and leading streaming platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and ZEE5 under a single subscription. Its Android-powered Binge+ set-top box further allows users to seamlessly switch between satellite television and internet-based content without changing devices.
The milestone comes at a time when India’s DTH industry is undergoing significant transformation. The pay-DTH subscriber base has declined in recent years as more viewers shift towards streaming services and free-to-air platforms such as DD Free Dish. Tata Play has also witnessed industry-wide challenges, including changes in shareholding following Temasek’s exit and the collapse of merger discussions with Airtel Digital TV.
Despite these headwinds, Tata Play continues to hold its position as the country’s leading DTH operator. As it celebrates two decades of service, Nagpal’s message serves as both a note of gratitude to subscribers and a reflection on the company’s journey, while signalling its commitment to evolving with the changing media and entertainment landscape.
