The Kerala government has written to the Centre seeking stricter film censorship in view of the increasing depiction and glorification of drug use and violence in Malayalam films.

According to a PTI report from Thiruvananthapuram yesterday, the State Government informed the Kerala State Human Rights Commission that it had urged the Centre to strengthen the film certification and censorship mechanism to curb such content.

The submission was made before Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas in connection with a complaint seeking regulation or a ban on films that promote violence.

The (State) Government also told the Commission that complaints received against such films had been forwarded to the Regional Office of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

It further informed the Commission that it had written to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting highlighting growing public concern over the unchecked content in films.

In a statement, the Human Rights Commission, according to the PTI report, said it had directed the State Government to bring to the Centre’s notice scenes in films that encourage drug use or violence.

Meanwhile, after seven months of legal battles and uncertainty, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s film ‘Jananayagan’ is finally set for a theatrical release.

The Central Board of Film Certification has granted the film an ‘A’ certificate after ordering the removal of 12 major portions. The film is expected to hit theatres by the end of July.
