The opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League (BBL) season will be played in India, marking a historic first for Australia’s premier T20 competition. The season opener between the Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers is scheduled to take place in Chennai on December 12.
According to a Reuters report from Sydney today, the announcement was made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday during the final day of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia. With the move, the Big Bash League will become the first overseas franchise-based T20 league to stage a match in India.
Speaking about the development, Albanese said he was pleased to expand sporting cooperation between Australia and India. He added that stronger ties through sport would also help boost trade, tourism and investment between the two countries.
The decision comes at a time when Cricket Australia is exploring private investment in the Big Bash League as part of its plans to strengthen the tournament’s finances and improve its competitiveness in the global T20 landscape. However, the proposal has drawn criticism from some quarters, with concerns that opening the league to private investors could eventually increase the influence of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners over the BBL.
IPL franchise owners have significantly expanded their presence in global cricket in recent years by acquiring teams in franchise leagues across England, South Africa, the United States, the West Indies and the United Arab Emirates. Critics believe similar investments in the BBL could change the structure and control of Australia’s domestic T20 competition.
Cricket Australia has said attracting private investment is aimed at strengthening the league financially and ensuring it remains competitive as franchise cricket continues to grow worldwide. The opening match in Chennai is also expected to help the BBL reach a wider audience in one of cricket’s biggest markets.
