India’s federal government has reconstituted the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), bringing together 18 members from across the film and creative industries, including actors Preity Zinta, Suniel Shetty, Pankaj Tripathi, Roopali Ganguly, Pallavi Joshi and Prosenjit Chatterjee.

The reconstitution has been carried out by the federal or the Central Government under the Cinematograph Act.

The new board will have a tenure of three years or until further orders, according to a statement put out yesterday by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The panel includes personalities with experience across different segments of the entertainment and cultural landscape. Zinta is an actor and film producer, while Shetty is an actor and entrepreneur.

Tripathi is known for his work in Hindi cinema and streaming (his latest venture ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ is playing in theatres presently), while ‘Anupamaa’ Ganguly has worked extensively in television and film.

Actor Joshi is the wife of filmmaker and writer Vivek Agnihotri who has made several films in the ‘Files’ franchise like ‘The Bengal Files’, ‘The Tashkent Files’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’.

The Board, headed by former Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi S. Vempati, also includes director Priyadarshan, actor Manoj Joshi, musician Ricky Kej, singer Hansraj Hans, filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda and poet Yatindra Mishra.

The remaining members are Vinod Anupam, Abhishek Jain, Supriya Yarlagadda, Nishigandha Wad, Waman Kendre and Ramesh Patange. The new composition brings together professionals from acting, filmmaking, music, literature and other creative fields.

The CBFC is the statutory body responsible for certifying films for public exhibition in India— popularly known as the censor board.

The government said the reconstituted board will serve for the next three years or until further orders.
