Marathi film ‘Gondhal’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2027 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. The Film Federation of India announced the selection on yesterday Sept18.

According to a PTI report from Mumbai, the film was selected from 33 movies that were submitted for consideration. ‘Gondhal’ is written and directed by Santosh Davakhar.

Set in rural Maharashtra, the film follows a newly married couple and takes place during a traditional Gondhal ritual. The story focuses on traditions, relationships and human emotions.

‘Gondhal’ is the fourth Marathi film to be selected as India’s entry for the Oscars. Earlier Marathi films chosen were ‘Shwaas’ in 2005, ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ in 2009 and ‘Court’ in 2015.

India has not yet won the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. Three Indian films ‘Mother India’, ‘Salaam Bombay’ and ‘Lagaan have received nominations in the category.The 99th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars 2027, are scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027.
