ITG, BharatGen unveil new AI-driven news anchor Sutra

India Today Group has announced the launch of ‘Sutra’, a new AI-driven news anchor, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. Developed in collaboration with BharatGen and showcased by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the platform is designed to report and interpret complex, real-time information through concise synthesis and contextual insights from the summit’s discussions.

The initiative reflects the Group’s push to integrate advanced technology within a structured editorial framework, aiming to bridge the gap between high-level policy conversations and public understanding. Sutra is expected to deliver real-time takeaways from key sessions at the summit, enhancing accessibility and clarity in news dissemination.

Speaking on the development, Nilanjan Das, Chief AI Officer at India Today Group, said the goal behind Sutra is to bring clarity to an increasingly fast-paced news cycle. He noted that the collaboration with BharatGen explores how artificial intelligence can make information more accessible and inclusive for a wider audience, while maintaining the editorial standards associated with the media house. He also described the initiative as a step towards achieving a sovereign AI future.

Rishi Bal, CEO of BharatGen, emphasised the importance of contextual intelligence in transforming India’s media landscape. He said AI must go beyond basic automation to develop a deeper understanding of language and context. According to Bal, BharatGen is working on sovereign, multimodal models capable of understanding the nuances of Indian languages and regional dialects, enabling more effective storytelling across diverse audiences.

He added that the focus remains on building indigenous AI capabilities that are culturally aware, linguistically inclusive and developed using home-grown technology. The collaboration, he said, aims to strengthen the technological foundation of Indian journalism while supporting innovation in real-time news delivery.

With the unveiling of Sutra, India Today Group seeks to expand the role of AI in journalism by combining technological innovation with editorial oversight, positioning the platform as a tool to simplify complex information and improve public engagement with policy and technology discussions.
