The Producers Guild of India and the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) have jointly said that new releases have set the box office afire, which is good for the Indian cinema industry.
Films like ‘Jailer’, ‘Gadar 2’, ‘Omg 2’ and ‘Bhola Shankar’ together have created a sensation, which is exhilarating, the industry bodies said.
The weekend spanning August 11 to 13 marked an extraordinary milestone as the busiest single weekend post-reopening. This triumphant occasion also set an all-time theatrical gross box office record, creating history in the industry’s more than 100 years of existence.
The weekend showcased the enduring appeal of cinema, drawing an impressive 2.10+ crore moviegoers to theaters nationwide. This surge in footfall not only shattered box office records but also achieved the highest combined admissions in the last decade, the two film bodies said.
The success of this weekend was attributed to the power of mainstream storytelling executed with precision, captivating audiences and reinvigorating the cinematic experience.
Shibasish Sarkar, President of the Producers Guild of India, expressed delight, stating in a statement, “Mainstream storytelling executed in the right way has resulted in the box office records being shattered.”
He attributed this remarkable feat to the collaborative efforts of dedicated filmmaking teams, whose combined talent and creativity created a special and memorable movie-going experience. The renewed enthusiasm of audiences filling theaters, even for early morning shows, reflects a newfound energy in the industry.
Kamal Gianchandani, President of the Multiplex Association of India, echoed the sentiment of the achievement.
“It was a historic weekend; it proves once again that India loves going to the movies to see great films,” he remarked.
This weekend serves as a compelling testament to the unique power of cinema to offer a shared and immersive experience. Gianchandani extended gratitude and congratulations to filmmakers and studios for their commitment to pushing creative boundaries and delivering unforgettable storytelling.
