Amitabh Bachchan recently opened up about his low-key wedding with Jaya Bachchan during an entertaining exchange with contestant Aheli Roy from Kolkata on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 18’. The contestant, who shared a unique connection with the megastar, turned the conversation personal and asked him how he convinced his mother-in-law and won over his in-laws before marrying Jaya.

Responding with his characteristic candid humour, Bachchan revealed that the couple did not go through an elaborate process of convincing their families or planning a traditional wedding. He recalled telling Jaya one day that they should get married, to which she agreed, and said the decision was made without discussing it with anyone else.

Bachchan explained that after they decided to marry, Jaya went and informed her parents. “Humne unko kuch nahi kaha, humne bass Jaya ji ko ek din bola ki shadi karleni chahiye, toh unhone kaha haa karleni chahiye aur bass taey hogaya,” he said. He added that the families subsequently met, had some conversations and the couple got married the very next day.

Reflecting on the simplicity of their decision, Bachchan said he believed marriage did not need to involve the extensive planning and arrangements that often accompany weddings. “Kon uss jhamela mein jaaye ki yeh taarik hoga, yeh kapda pehnege, idhar jaayenge udhar jaayenge yeh sab karenge band-vand bajega iska kuch faida nahi,” he said, adding that for him, simply accepting Jaya as his wife was what mattered most.

Beyond the conversation about his marriage, Bachchan was also impressed by Aheli’s bubbly personality, smile and individuality. He praised her for choosing to focus on what makes her happy instead of allowing negative surroundings or societal expectations to influence her choices.

The special episode of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 18’ airs Monday to Friday at 9pm on Sony Entertainment Television.
