India showcased its growing stature as a global content and filmmaking hub with the inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, where actor Alia Bhatt led the country’s film industry delegation at the opening ceremony.

The pavilion was opened on May 13, coinciding with the launch of the Cannes Film Market, regarded as the world’s largest film marketplace, an UNI report from Cannes said yesterday.

Situated along the Mediterranean coast, the Bharat Pavilion serves as India’s official platform at the Cannes Film Market, facilitating global engagement in the buying and selling of films. The pavilion is an initiative of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and is operated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).

Delivering the keynote address, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar (in the picture with Alia Bhatt) described the pavilion as a declaration of India’s ambitions in the global entertainment industry.

“The Bharat Pavilion is a statement of intent. It says India is ready for the future,” Kumar said, highlighting the country’s emergence as a major international content hub.

Inviting global filmmakers and studios to collaborate with India, Kumar said, “Co-produce in India, post-produce in India and shoot films in India.” He also stressed India’s openness to global storytelling traditions, adding that the country had “a strong openness to diverse cinematic voices from across the world.”

The UNI report noted that India’s entertainment industry was valued at USD32 billion, or around Rs 3.06 trillion, last year, registering a growth of 9.1 per cent over the previous year. Kumar recalled that Mumbai hosted the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) last year, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underlining India’s growing importance as a global content destination.

During the inauguration ceremony, the poster and trailer of the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), scheduled to be held in Panaji, Goa, from November 20 to 28, were unveiled along with an India Film Guide.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who is the director of IFFI Goa, attended the event alongside Christian Jeune, Deputy General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, and NFDC Managing Director Prakash Magdum.

According to UNI, the Bharat Pavilion will host a series of seminars and discussions during the festival to promote India’s creative economy and strengthen international collaborations in the entertainment sector.
