Akash Ambani has been appointed as the Managing Director of Jio Platforms for a five-year term beginning April 9, 2026, marking a major leadership development within the Reliance Group’s digital and telecom business.
According to an Economic Times report, the appointment was approved during a board meeting held on April 9, 2026, and has been reflected in corporate filings submitted to India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). The decision was taken based on the recommendations of the company’s Nomination and Remuneration Committee and remains subject to shareholder approval.
Akash Ambani, the eldest son of Mukesh Ambani, has steadily taken on larger responsibilities within the group’s telecom and technology businesses over the last decade. He currently serves as the Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, a role he assumed in June 2022 after previously serving as a non-executive director since 2014.
Over the years, Akash Ambani has played a key role in shaping the company’s digital ecosystem and consumer technology initiatives. He has been associated with projects focused on emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things. He was also closely involved with the rollout of the JioPhone initiative, which significantly expanded internet accessibility across India by bringing affordable digital connectivity to millions of first-time users.
Apart from telecom and digital services, Akash Ambani also serves on the board of Reliance Retail Ventures and has been part of several strategic leadership and product-focused committees within the group. His growing role within Reliance’s digital businesses is being viewed as part of the conglomerate’s long-term leadership transition strategy as it continues to strengthen its position across telecom, retail, technology, and digital services.
Beyond the corporate space, Akash Ambani has also been associated with the operational leadership of Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League.
The appointment comes at a significant time for Jio Platforms as the company continues to expand its footprint across telecom, digital infrastructure, AI-led services, enterprise solutions, and connected technologies while strengthening its position in India’s fast-evolving digital economy.
