As the awards season reaches its peak, ‘Hamnet’ is set to make its streaming debut on Peacock on March 6, strategically arriving just days before the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony.
The film, directed by Chloe Zhao, has generated significant buzz for its emotional storytelling and strong performances.
According to a report by UNI, the film features Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare, while Jessie Buckley delivers a powerful performance as his wife Anne Hathaway, which has emerged as the emotional core of the narrative. Buckley recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama and is also nominated for Best Lead Actress at the Actor Awards this weekend and at next month’s Oscars.
The film explores the tragic backstory of Shakespeare’s family and the personal experiences that inspired him to write ‘Hamlet’. It follows the lives of the couple’s three children—Hamnet, Judith and Susanna—played by Jacobi Jupe, Olivia Lynes and Bodhi Rae Breathnach. The supporting cast includes Emily Watson as William’s mother, David Wilmot as his father and Joe Alwyn as Anne’s brother. The film is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name.
‘Hamnet’ has secured eight nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Buckley, Adapted Screenplay for Zhao and O’Farrell, as well as nominations for Costume Design, Casting, Original Score and Production Design. At this Sunday’s Actor Awards, the film is also nominated for Best Ensemble, Lead Actress and Lead Actor for Mescal.
In the highly competitive Best Actress category at the Oscars, Buckley faces strong contenders including Rose Byrne for ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value and Emma Stone for ‘Bugonia’, setting the stage for a closely watched awards season showdown.
