Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed 1970 classic ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ is set to return to the big screen, with PVR INOX announcing a theatrical re-release of the film in a 4K restored print.
The restored version will be screened across select theatres beginning January 9, offering audiences a chance to experience the landmark film in enhanced visual quality.
According to a PTI report, the re-release will take place in major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.
The film will be presented with English subtitles, making it accessible to a wider audience while preserving the original cinematic experience envisioned by Ray.
‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ features an ensemble cast led by Sharmila Tagore, Simi Garewal, Soumitra Chatterjee and Aparna Sen.
The film follows four brash young men from the city who embark on a seemingly carefree trip to the forests of Jharkhand, hoping to break free from the monotony of their urban lives. What begins as an escape soon turns into a journey of self-reflection, as their ideas about life, love and identity are gradually questioned and reshaped.
Widely regarded as one of Satyajit Ray’s most nuanced works, the film explores class, privilege and human relationships with subtlety and depth. Its naturalistic performances and layered storytelling have ensured its place as a timeless classic in Indian cinema.
The 4K restoration is expected to highlight the film’s visual textures and atmospheric settings, bringing renewed attention to Ray’s craft for both long-time admirers and younger viewers discovering the film for the first time. The re-release also forms part of a broader effort to preserve and reintroduce landmark Indian films to contemporary audiences through theatrical screenings.
With this initiative, PVR INOX continues to expand its slate of restored classics, reaffirming the enduring relevance of Satyajit Ray’s cinema on the big screen.
