The trailer of ‘Happy Patel’, Vir Das’s directorial debut, is out and sets the tone for a quirky spy-comedy thriller packed with absurd humour and self-aware gags.
Backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the film sees Vir Das returning to the big screen as a reluctant, accident-prone agent whose biggest challenge may not be the mission itself, but his own incompetence. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on January 19, 2026.
According to an ANI report, ‘Happy Patel’ is jointly directed by Vir Das and Kavi Shastri, with Das also playing the lead role. The trailer opens on a comically telling note, with Das’s character confidently assembling a rifle—only to forget the trigger. The moment neatly explains why he has failed the MI7 exam seven times, setting up the film’s central joke: a spy who is spectacularly unfit for the job.
Assigned to a confidential mission in Goa, Happy Patel finds himself completely out of sync with Indian culture and traditions. The trailer teases a series of misadventures, from being brutally interrogated by Mona Singh’s character to engaging in an over-the-top, slow-motion aerial fight with Imran Khan. The humour leans heavily into exaggeration, parodying classic spy tropes while embracing a distinctly Indian comic sensibility.
Adding to the intrigue, Aamir Khan appears in a cameo role, briefly seen chasing people in a car and firing a gun. His presence has already generated buzz, especially given his long association with unconventional, content-driven cinema. The film marks a reunion between Aamir Khan Productions and Vir Das nearly 14 years after Delhi Belly hit theatres in 2011.
Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Aamir Khan Productions wrote, “GAONWALONNNNN. He is a chef, he is an agent (kind of), he is a hero (probably), and he is HAPPY PATEL! Meet our Khatarnak Jasoos in theatres from 16th January.”
The project has been in the spotlight since an earlier announcement video went viral. In the clip, Aamir Khan humorously grills Vir Das about his filmmaking choices, poking fun at action sequences, romance, and even the absence of a conventional item number. The banter escalates into a meta-comedy on flops, audience reactions and industry hypocrisy, with Vir defending his “offbeat” vision while Aamir mockingly dismisses it—only to later claim every criticised idea was his own.
With ‘Happy Patel’, Vir Das appears to be blending satire, slapstick and spy-thriller elements into a self-referential comedy that does not take itself seriously. Backed by a production house known for films like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Taare Zameen Par’, ‘Dangal’ and ‘Secret Superstar’, the film is shaping up as a bold, genre-bending experiment aimed squarely at delivering laughter with a sharp, irreverent edge.
