Star Pravah is set to premiere its next landmark historical series, ‘Mi Savitribai Jyotirao Phule’, a powerful retelling of the life and legacy of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule, India’s first woman educator and one of the most influential social reformers of the 19th century.
According to a press release, the show, starring Madhurani Gokhale as Savitribai Phule and Dr. Amol Kolhe as Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, will begin airing on January 5.
The series, produced by Jagdamba Creations, traces the extraordinary journey of the Phule couple as they challenged oppressive traditions, championed girls’ education and ignited a social revolution that reshaped Maharashtra and the nation.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century Maharashtra, ‘Mi Savitribai Jyotirao Phule’ brings to life the story of a woman who defied rigid societal norms at a time when educating girls was considered unacceptable. Alongside her husband, Savitribai Phule launched a reform movement that laid the foundation for a more equal and just society.
Star Pravah has consistently showcased Maharashtra’s historic and cultural icons through acclaimed series like ‘Raja Shivchatrapati’, ‘Jai Bhavani Jai Shivaji’ and ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’. With this latest offering, the channel once again turns to a revolutionary figure whose work continues to inspire generations.
The show aims to reintroduce Savitribai’s courage, resilience and pioneering thought to today’s viewers.
A JioStar spokesperson said the channel believes in using entertainment as a meaningful medium for reflection and social awareness. “Mi Savitribai Jyotirao Phule isn’t just a historical retelling it is a celebration of a revolutionary woman whose courage reshaped the future of every girl in this state. Maharashtra’s heritage is rich with stories of progress and equality, and it’s our privilege to bring this legacy to homes across the state,” the spokesperson said.
Madhurani Gokhale, who plays Savitribai, shared that stepping into the role of such a towering reformer comes with immense responsibility. She noted that the freedoms enjoyed by women today are rooted in battles fought more than a century ago. “Savitribai Phule was a woman ahead of her time. Portraying such a personality is a huge responsibility. I feel blessed to have this opportunity, and I hope the audience supports us,” she said.
Dr. Amol Kolhe, who portrays Jyotiba Phule and also produces the series, called the role an emotional journey. Known for playing several iconic characters, Kolhe said portraying Phule is uniquely challenging. “He was a blazing torch of revolutionary thought. To convey the ideas of such a reformer is a great responsibility,” he said. Kolhe also reflected on his long association with Star Pravah, adding that returning to the channel after 17 years — this time also as a producer — makes the project even more meaningful.
‘Mi Savitribai Jyotirao Phule’ promises to bring the inspiring story of India’s first woman teacher to a new generation of viewers, highlighting her immense contribution to women’s rights and social justice.
The show premieres on January 5, only on Star Pravah.
