Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that a sequel to its blockbuster hit ‘Minecraft’ is in the works. Titled ‘Minecraft 2’, the much-awaited follow-up is set to release in theatres on July 23, 2027, the studio announced via Instagram.
The first ‘Minecraft’ film, which released in April 2025, turned out to be a global phenomenon, grossing USD 162 million domestically and USD 312 million worldwide in its opening weekend. Based on the iconic video game franchise, the family adventure went on to earn USD 957 million globally, making it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, just behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which collected USD 1.03 billion.
According to a UNI report, the sequel will once again be directed by Jared Hess, who also helmed the first film. Hess will co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta, while Jack Black is expected to reprise his role as Steve, the expert crafter adored by fans. The original film also featured Jason Momoa in a leading role, portraying one of the heroes transported into the pixelated world of Minecraft.
Returning to produce the sequel are Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Jason Momoa. Their combined efforts previously helped Minecraft become a major box office success, credited with reviving Warner Bros.’ theatrical fortunes after a string of disappointing releases such as Joker: Folie à Deux, Mickey 17, and The Alto Knights.
Following Minecraft’s success, Warner Bros. regained momentum with a series of hits including Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines, F1: The Movie, Superman, Weapons, and The Conjuring: Last Rites. The studio capped off 2025 with Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which earned USD 110 million in two weeks against a USD 130 million budget.
With ‘Minecraft 2’ now officially on the slate, Warner Bros. aims to extend its winning streak while capitalizing on the immense fanbase of the original film and the globally beloved video game. Fans can expect the new chapter to expand the Minecraft universe with fresh adventures, returning heroes, and new challenges — all set within the blocky, creative world that has captivated millions around the world.
