After its celebrated World Premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight, an independent section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, filmmaker Kanu Behl’s much-acclaimed Hindi feature ‘Agra’ is finally set for a theatrical release in India on November 14, 2025.

According to a press release, ‘Agra’ marks Behl’s second outing at Cannes after his debut feature Titli (2014), which premiered at Un Certain Regard. Notably, ‘Agra’ was the only Indian film selected for Directors’ Fortnight in 2023. Since then, the Indo-French co-production, backed by Saregama India Ltd, UFO Production, and O28 Films, has travelled across global festivals and won accolades including the Special Jury Award at MAMI 2023, Best Indie Film and Best Actor at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2023, and Best Film and Best Actor at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2024.

The film also marks the comeback of ‘Aashiqui’ star Rahul Roy, with debutant Mohit Agarwal playing the lead role. The cast further includes Priyanka Bose, known for her performances in the Oscar-nominated ‘Lion’ and ‘Jugnuma: The Fable’, South Indian star Ruhani Sharma, along with seasoned actors Vibha Chibber, Sonal Jha, and Aanchal Goswami.

Written by Kanu Behl and Atika Chohan, ‘Agra’ is a raw and unflinching exploration of sexual dynamics within a family and the fractures created in a modern India that is increasingly confined to shrinking spaces. Developed at the PJLF Three Rivers Residency in Italy, with support from the prestigious ‘Cinema du Monde’ film fund, the film was also showcased at NFDC’s Film Bazaar Viewing Room in 2022.

Speaking about the film’s release, Kanu Behl shared, “Agra has perhaps been the toughest journey of my life so far. It has taken me close to a decade to bring this film to its eventual audience — the Indian viewers. My hope is that it speaks its voice loud and clear and starts a conversation about our sexuality, the spaces we inhabit, and the realities buried within. I have never been so excited to share a piece of my work.”

The story revolves around Guru, a 25-year-old sexually repressed young man who lives in a cramped house in Agra. While his mother shares the room with him, his father resides upstairs with a mistress, leaving Guru to dream of claiming the terrace for himself and his imaginary lover, Mala. As the family battles for space and material gain, Guru grapples with his sexuality, leading to encounters that shape his turbulent journey of desire, repression, and self-discovery.

With its fearless narrative and acclaimed performances, ‘Agra’ promises to be one of the most provocative and talked-about Indian theatrical releases of the year.
