Celebrating the centenary of one of Indian cinema’s most iconic filmmakers, Zee Classic has announced a special programming line-up titled ‘Bemisaal Guru Dutt’. The month-long festival will showcase some of Guru Dutt’s finest works every Saturday at 10 pm, inviting audiences to revisit the timeless artistry that defined his legacy.
Guru Dutt, remembered for his poetic style, evocative camera techniques and deeply human themes, gave Indian cinema films that continue to resonate across generations. His works were more than stories on screen — they were lyrical experiences interwoven with music, characters and visual language that captured the struggles, romance and contradictions of life.
As part of the retrospective, ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959) opens the series on September 6. The film, considered one of Guru Dutt’s most personal creations, reflects on the emptiness behind fame with the haunting melody “Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam.”
On September 13, the channel will air ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), often hailed as Guru Dutt’s masterpiece. The story of a disillusioned poet ignored by society, the film continues to strike a chord with its critique of materialism, enriched by songs like “Jaane woh kaise log the” and “Jinhen naaz hai Hind par.”
The celebration continues on September 20 with ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’ (1960), a tale of love and heartbreak remembered for its title track — regarded as one of Indian cinema’s greatest romantic ballads.
Concluding the series on September 27 is ‘Aar Paar’ (1954), a film that blended romance, comedy and suspense, and gave audiences the evergreen track “Babuji dheere chalna.”
Through ‘Bemisaal Guru Dutt’, Zee Classic pays tribute to the filmmaker’s enduring influence on Indian cinema. The line-up reaffirms how Guru Dutt’s cinema continues to inspire and remind audiences of the beauty, pain and poetry woven into his vision.
