Meta-owned Instagram is gearing up to roll out a new feature that could change the way users consume short-form content on the platform. The app is testing a picture-in-picture mode for Reels, allowing users to continue watching videos in a floating window while simultaneously using other apps.
According to a TOI report, the feature is aimed at boosting engagement and retention, especially as rival platforms like TikTok and YouTube already offer similar multitasking tools. By letting users scroll through their phones without interrupting video playback, Instagram hopes to make Reels more sticky and convenient for its growing user base.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri had earlier hinted at the possibility of such a feature, acknowledging user requests and confirming that the platform was exploring ways to make Reels more flexible. While the rollout timeline has not been confirmed, the testing phase suggests that the update could soon be available to a wider audience.
With Reels continuing to be the centrepiece of Instagram’s content strategy, the new addition signals Meta’s intent to keep pace with competitors and expand viewing options for creators and audiences alike.
