Fans eager to return to the swamp with ‘Shrek’ and his friends will have to wait a little longer. The fifth instalment of the beloved animated franchise has been pushed back, with Universal Studios confirming the new release date as June 30, 2027.
The film, earlier slated for a December 2026 release, will now arrive six months later, giving the creators more time to bring the highly-anticipated adventure to life, according to a PTI report. ‘Shrek 5’ is being helmed by original creators Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, keeping the spirit of the earlier films intact.
Mike Myers will once again voice the lovable ogre, alongside Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. The film will also introduce a new character, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona, voiced by Zendaya, best known for her roles in ‘Dune’ and the ‘Spider-Man’ series.
First launched in 2001, the ‘Shrek’ franchise has remained one of the most successful animated series in Hollywood, blending humour, heart, and memorable characters. With the return of the original cast and a fresh storyline, ‘Shrek 5’ is expected to be one of the biggest animated releases of 2027.
