The News Broadcasters Federation (NBF), an industry organisation of TV news channels in India, yesterday issued an advisory to its members to exercise caution and restraint, and more importantly, desist from hosting Pakistani guests on news shows in the light of the Pahalgam killings of innocent tourists in Kashmir by terrorists from across the border, and deteriorating diplomatic relations between Pakistan and India.
“In view of the current security situation and diplomatic action by India against Pakistan, member channels…are advised to exercise enhanced editorial discretion when considering participation of foreign nationals, particularly from Pakistan, in panel discussions or televised debates,” the NBF advisory issued late evening yesterday said.
As a precautionary measure, the advisory added that NBF “strongly requests” TV news channels stop inviting guests or panelists from Pakistan for participation in news debates, panel discussions, or any programming content, until further notice
“This is a precautionary suggestion — considering the current geopolitical context and the need to act responsibly in national interest — and is aimed at ensuring that we maintain the highest standards of journalistic integrity and public sentiment.
“We advise our members to uphold the highest standards of editorial discretion and judgment,” the statement stressed.
Pakistani terrorists attacked a group of tourists in the Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam, in Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, leaving 26 people dead, including a couple of foreigners, and several more injured. According to media reports, it was the first major terror attack on civilians in Kashmir since the Centre ended J&K’s special status in 2019.
NBF is one of India’s largest industry associations, representing the combined interests of over 300 TV news channels.
