Google is set to release a new streaming device named the ‘Google TV Streamer,’ signaling a significant departure from its familiar Chromecast design. According to a report from TOI, this new device adopts a set-top box form factor rather than the traditional dongle-style hardware.
The Google TV Streamer features a wide, pill-shaped design with a slanted surface, resembling a miniature version of the Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock. This new form factor suggests that Google is aiming to offer more functionality than its previous models. The device will connect to televisions via HDMI and power cables, maintaining a low profile beneath the TV.
While specific features are still unconfirmed, there is speculation about the inclusion of Ultra Wideband-powered Tap to Cast functionality, similar to what was recently introduced for the Pixel Tablet.
The shift from “Chromecast with Google TV” to “Google TV Streamer” indicates a broader change in Google’s streaming strategy. This move aligns with the recent rebranding of “Chromecast built-in” to “Google Cast” earlier this year.
The Google TV Streamer could be launched alongside the upcoming Pixel 9 phone unveiling, which is scheduled for August 13.
This new device represents Google’s evolving approach to home entertainment, potentially offering users a more versatile and feature-rich streaming experience.
