Amazon expands Alexa portfolio with new devices, including Echo Show

Amazon has unveiled five new Alexa-powered devices, expanding its smart home portfolio with upgrades spanning speakers, smart displays, a bedside clock and a digital photo frame.

The new lineup combines artificial intelligence (AI), home automation, personalised experiences and improved audio-visual features, as the company looks to make Alexa more capable of handling complex requests and everyday tasks.

The announcement, made yesterday, comes as hundreds of millions of customers use Amazon’s newer Alexa experiences, with users talking to the assistant two to three times more and making more complex requests, the company said.

The India launch dates were not mentioned, nor were any other particular markets except the US.

Echo Dot: The next-generation Echo Dot adds a built-in smart home hub, enabling Alexa to connect with thousands of compatible devices, including lights, locks and thermostats.

An integrated eero Wi-Fi extender provides up to 1,000 square feet of additional coverage to an existing network.

Powered by Amazon’s custom AZ3 silicon and a new AI Accelerator, the speaker improves conversational detection and filters background noise. It also delivers 50 percent more bass than its predecessor.

The Echo Dot is priced at $99.99, while the Kids variants, which include a year of Amazon Kids+, cost $109.99. Both are available to ship immediately.

Echo Studio with Home Camera: Amazon has added visual intelligence to its premium speaker, combining its existing audio architecture, including a high-excursion woofer and Dolby Atmos, with Advanced Room Adaptation that continuously tunes sound to the room.

The Home Camera enables Alexa to interpret its surroundings and assist with tasks such as explaining the rules of a board game shown to it or identifying a cereal box to help reorder the product.

Users can also check in on a room through the Alexa app while away. Amazon said the device will soon support video calling on compatible Fire TVs.

The Echo Studio costs $219.99, while the new Echo Studio with Home Camera is priced at $249.99.

Echo Time: Designed for bedside use, Echo Time is a customisable smart clock with a camera-free design and hundreds of clock faces, including sports team themes.

Its Omnisense-powered sleep sensing technology detects lighter sleep and can wake users between 10 and 60 minutes before their scheduled alarm, without requiring a wearable device.

The display gradually brightens to simulate a sunrise as the alarm approaches, while the alarm tone builds gently.

Echo Time costs $199.99, while the Kids version, bundled with a year of Amazon Kids+, is priced at $209.99.

Alexa Photo Frame: The new 10-inch touchscreen photo frame is designed to bring images stored on phones into the home.

It syncs photographs automatically through Amazon Photos and uses Alexa to surface selected images, prioritising pictures such as those featuring smiling faces while filtering out screenshots and other clutter.

Users can request photographs of a particular person, pet or trip, or browse images directly on the anti-glare touchscreen.

Echo Show 16: Amazon’s redesigned 16-inch smart display offers 20 percent more power for interactions, a screen that is nearly 40 percent thinner and 10 percent more viewing area.

Its optional Nanomatte finish reduces glare by more than 90 percent, while retaining image detail and colour, the Amazon statement claimed.

The new Alexa Home Map provides a visual overview of connected lights, locks, thermostats and cameras. Fire TV is also built in.

The Echo Show 16 features Amazon’s most advanced Echo Show camera to date, with a wider field of view, auto-framing and night vision for Live View monitoring.

All five devices run the latest version of Alexa, which Amazon said can hold more natural conversations, reason more deeply, ask clarifying questions and coordinate information from multiple sources to complete complex, multi-step requests.

On devices with screens, Alexa can generate visual content during conversations and organise exchanges into Cards, allowing users to resume interactions across Echo devices, the Alexa app and Alexa.com.

Certain features require Alexa+, which is included with a Prime membership, Amazon said.
