The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has formally notified the nomination of 13 working journalists to the Press Council of India (PCI), with six editors and seven non-editor working journalists being included in the updated composition of the statutory body.
The nominations were notified through a Central Government gazette notification dated October 7, 2026. According to the MIB notification, the order amends the principal gazette notification issued in December 2024, which was subsequently amended in December 2025. The latest amendment has been issued under sub-section (1) of Section 6 and clause (a) of sub-section (3) of Section 5 of the Press Council Act, 1978, PTI reported.
Issued by MIB Joint Secretary K.K. Nirala, the notification creates distinct sub-categories for editorial leadership and non-editor working journalists within the Council’s composition. The representation comes alongside existing members representing newspaper management and ownership.
The six editors nominated to the Press Council of India are Pradeep Kumar Jain, Sayed Raza Husain Rizvi, Ankur Dua, Aparna Shukla, Raj Parwana/Narender Singh, and Vinod Bajpai.
The seven journalists nominated under the non-editor working journalist category are Vinod Kohli, Geetartha Pathak, Prajnananda Chaudhuri, Kingshuk Pramanik, C.K. Nayak, Prasanna Kumar Mohanty, and Bijoy Kakchingtabam.
The nominees bring representation from several major media hubs and regional press centres across the country. Their locations span New Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Imphal, Raipur, Kanpur, Gonda and Muzaffarnagar, giving the updated composition a broad regional representation.
The Press Council of India is a statutory quasi-judicial body tasked with preserving press freedom and maintaining and improving standards of newspapers and news agencies in the country. The latest notification updates the membership structure of the Council, while its statutory mandate and regulatory powers remain unchanged.
