Netflix has announced a line-up of upcoming Mexican films and a special collection of local content ahead of Mexican Cinema Day on August 15.
According to a Netflix press release yesterday, the upcoming titles include ‘Facing El Chapo’, directed by Chava Cartas and starring Alfonso Herrera and Noe Hernandez. The film follows the operation that led to the capture of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzman and will release on Netflix on August 21.
Other announced projects include ‘Surviving Hurricane Otis’, ‘Ashes’, ‘35 días’, ‘El enemigo del pueblo’ and the documentaries ‘Liliana’s Invincible Summer’, ‘Marcos. Another World Is Possible’ and a documentary about the orca Keiko.
Netflix has also launched a new ‘Celebrating Mexican Storytelling’ section. Available from August 13, the collection brings together Mexican films and other content, including comedies, dramas, love stories, award-winning films and documentaries. The collection also marks Netflix’s 15th anniversary in Mexico.
As part of the celebration, Netflix will also bring a collection of classic films starring Mexican cinema icon Cantinflas. The films will be available from September 1 through March 2027 and include ‘El gendarme desconocido’, ‘El circo’, ‘Romeo y Julieta’, ‘Gran hotel’, ‘El bolero de Raquel’, ‘El analfabeto’, ‘El padrecito’ and several other classics.
Netflix said the initiative is aimed at showcasing the diversity of Mexican cinema and giving audiences more opportunities to discover stories and talent from the country. The company also highlighted its partnership with Mexico’s audiovisual industry to promote local stories and bring them to audiences around the world.
