Instagram has refreshed its wordmark for the first time in a decade, giving the brand name a new look. Instagram Design announced the update on August 13 as part of a refreshed wordmark and brand system. According to an announcement by Instagram Design yesterday, the update focuses on the way the ‘Instagram’ name is written while keeping the brand’s familiar identity.
Instagram said the refreshed wordmark features updated curves and custom spacing designed to reflect individual handwriting and everyday human expression. The new lettering aims to give the brand a cleaner and more modern appearance while retaining elements of Instagram’s original character.
The update marks the first refresh of Instagram’s wordmark in 10 years. The change is focused on the text-based ‘Instagram’ wordmark rather than a complete redesign of the platform’s visual identity. The familiar multicoloured camera icon remains unchanged.
The new wordmark has also received mixed reactions online. Some users have criticised the readability of the redesigned letters, particularly the new ‘r’, while others have welcomed the refreshed look. Several users have joked that the new lettering makes the name look like ‘Instagzam’.
Instagram’s latest wordmark update is part of a broader refresh of its visual identity. The company is looking to give the brand a more modern appearance while continuing to retain elements of the creative character associated with Instagram’s original design.
