As ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ entered its sixth week in cinemas, producer Mohit Choudhary yesterday said the Imtiaz Ali-directed film has become a commercial hit by recovering its costs through theatrical and non-theatrical revenues.
According to a PTI report from Mumbai yesterday, ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’, a Partition-era romantic drama that unfolds across two timelines and generations, released in cinemas across the country on June 12 and had a slow start in its opening week.
But positive reviews and strong word of mouth helped the film grow steadily at the box office where it has grossed Rs 98.01 crore, as per Sacnilk, a trade tracking website.
The Hindi film, which continues to play in more than 300 shows across India and remains in cinemas in 10 international markets, including the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland, Australia, the UAE, Singapore and Germany, is expected to cross Rs 100 crore mark soon.
The film is an intergenerational romantic drama that follows a grandson’s quest to uncover his dementia-afflicted and dying grandfather’s hidden past and fulfill a 78-year-old promise made during the 1947 Partition.
The cast of the 2026 Hindi-language romantic drama film features Diljit Dosanjh as Nirvair, Naseeruddin Shah as Ishar or Keenu, Vedang Raina as young Ishar, and Sharvari as Jiya.
The ensemble cast includes notable performances by Banita Sandhu (Kaveri), Rajat Kapoor (Iqbal Grewal), Sanjay Suri (Jasmer Grewal), Kumud Mishra (BSF Chief) and Manish Chaudhary (Muzaffar Ahmedzai). Other cast members supporting the main roles include Danish Pandor, Anjana Sukhani, Vinod Nagpal, Dolly Ahluwalia, Nikhat Khan, Sahil Mehta and Jaipreet Singh.
Meanwhile, media reports stated that unlike Riteish Deshmukh’s ‘Raja Shivaji’, which exploded during holiday corridors like Maharashtra Day, ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ captured multiplexes slowly.
It started with empty halls but triggered a nationwide phenomenon when early morning 6.30 am shows unexpectedly began selling out through urban word-of-mouth.Experts have also opined that factoring in non-theatrical revenues, including an estimated Rs. 30 crore from digital, satellite and music rights, the project, made at an estimated cost of Rs. 70 crore, has safely secured its status as a profitable commercial venture.
